What is cystitis and how is it treated?

Cystitis is a common lower urinary tract infection (UTI) that specifically refers to inflammation of the bladder. While some cases may clear up on its own, if symptoms persist longer than 48 hours antibiotic treatment may be needed to prevent complications.
We offer a three day course of Nitrofurantoin (Macrobid) antibiotic for the treatment of cystitis, the first line treatment for uncomplicated cystitis. You would take one capsule twice a day for 3 days, and should notice an improvement in symptoms within 2-3days of starting treatment.

What are the common side effects?

The most common side effects of nitrofurantoin, particularly when taken orally, are related to the gastrointestinal system. These include:

Nausea
Vomiting
Loss of appetite
Stomach pain or discomfort
Diarrhea

Other common side effects can include:

Headache
Dizziness or drowsiness

Important Notes:

Taking nitrofurantoin with food or milk can significantly help reduce the gastrointestinal side effects.
Nitrofurantoin often causes your urine to turn a dark yellow or brownish color. This is a normal and harmless effect of the medication and not a cause for concern.
While less common, it's important to be aware of more serious side effects like lung problems, liver problems, nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy), and severe allergic reactions. If you experience symptoms like difficulty breathing, yellowing skin/eyes, severe abdominal pain, or numbness/tingling, you should seek medical attention immediately.
